President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated that the Indonesian government carefully considered all factors before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. His main focus throughout the talks was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, especially the workers. “We have analyzed everything, conducted negotiations, and my priority is the people. I must ensure the safety of our workers,” Prabowo stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Despite facing challenges, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia maintained a strong position during the negotiations. “We have taken a firm stance and presented our offer. We have limitations, but the most crucial thing is to protect our workers,” he highlighted. The president also expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economy, stating that it remains robust and well-equipped to handle global uncertainties, such as trade tensions.

Regarding the tariff discussions with the U.S., Prabowo described the negotiations as tough yet fruitful. Both sides eventually reached a mutual understanding after recognizing each other’s strategic interests. “We have acknowledged their priorities, and they have understood ours. This led to an agreement,” he explained. “The tariff reduction from 32% to 19% was achieved through continuous negotiations. I had discussions with President Trump, who is known for being a tough negotiator,” Prabowo added.

Previously, President Trump announced a trade agreement with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%. This outcome reflects the successful negotiations between the two countries to benefit their economies and strengthen trade relations.
